THE ADVENTURE GIRLS

Page history last edited by Archer844 13 years ago

When The Donnybrook Girls ended it's epic 17-film run in early 1945, the principal players soon returned in new series. SARAH MAY GREGORY & ELIZA DUNCAN turned up as competitive private detectives in TWO ON A CLUE beginning later in 1945, while ADRIANNE PALMER & KRISTEN BELMONT return to the screen as cousins "Adrianne and Kristen Ames", who work as troubleshooters for their family's international "Advernture Travel Company". As explained in the first installment, entitled simply THE ADVENTURE GIRLS (1946), Adrianne and Kris were both in the O.S.S. during World War II and developed a taste for foreign travel and high adventure. While Adrianne , as she was in The Donnybrook Series, acts as the "muscle" of the pair, while Kristen is the fast-talking "brains", she is more hot-tempered than her former "Cherry Martin" character and has a sarcastic humor of her own.

The most memorable element of the series was NADIA BJORLANDT, an exotic-looking beauty who had been playing villainesses in various D-G series. (She also had an impressive turn as the ego-centric opera singer who causes so much trouble for NEVE NORTHWOOD (Nev Campbell) & AMANDA SCHUYLER (Amanda Schull)n 1944's FIGHTING SWANS IN EUROPE). In this series she appears as international adventuress "Persia Dane", who always involved the girls clients in some sort of theft, swindle and onc (RANGOON RUBY RANSOM) kidnapping.

Often tripped up by her own deviousness, Persia always seems to scramble away or escape from prison to pop up later and make life hard for the girls. (Why she keeps plaguing the clients of this one company is something the series never explains, but fans have never cared). Persia was usually accompanied by at least one petite accomplice (to give Kris someone to fight, of course), which was the one changing aspect of the series beyond the different locales. (Though nearly all the shooting was doine on the backlot with travel footage from the D-A vault to add local color. Though some location footage was filmed in Mexico for the last iinstallment CURSE OF THE GOLDEN JAGUAR).
